Nestled between mountains on the beautiful Tennesee River sits Hales Bar Dam. Construction of the dam began Sept 1905 and was completed Nov 1913. The dam was built on what once was native Cherokee territory. During the illegal Treaty of Sycamore Shoals, on March 17th 1775, War Chief, Dragging Canoe, cursed the land vowing that it was a "dark and bloody" land that would be unproductive and uninhabitable to anyone that attempted to settle there. The Cherokee people also believed the water where the dam was built is sacred, and Hales Bar Dam has been plagued with leaks from the beginning. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) aquired Hales Bar Dam in August 1939. After many years and millions of dollars spent on repairs, the dam was finally decommissioned in 1967. Hales Bar Dam is now owned by Hales Bar Marina and Resort and is known as paranormal hotspot drawing visitors from all over the country who come to investigate spirits of the past. From spirits of the past we now offer spirits of the present, proudly being home to Dam Whiskey Co. where we produce our fine spirits- Dam Whiskey, Dam Straight Bourbon, Dam Vodka, and Dam Moonshine.
